On 17 September, RIAS are pleased to welcome Dr Heba Sarhan, Research Fellow - Architecture, University of Strathclyde, Michael Dougall, Director, O’Donnell Brown, and Darren Wilson, Associate Director at White Arkitekter for an insightful event exploring ethical approaches to housing design.

This session will look at:

  • home design as a tool for supporting access to experiencing ‘home’ and alleviating barriers of social inequality

  • examples and case studies for achieving accessible, adaptable home design to support wellbeing

  • discussion around the need for new types of housing to support those most in need in response to the housing and climate emergencies

About the Speakers

Dr Heba Sarhan, Research Fellow - Architecture, University of Strathclyde

Dr Heba Sarhan is a Research Fellow in Architecture with an interest in the blurred boundaries between knowledge, practice and community interests. Participatory work forms a central theme in her work in academia and professional practice in the areas of design, sustainability and well-being.

Heba explored new dimensions of home design and retrofit in her PhD and post-doctoral research. She is planning to pursue a following career step with particular interest in sustainable and community engagement practices.

Community engagement practices include an interactive tool that aims to engage members of the community, including children, in creating ideas for home adaptation for supporting wellbeing https://athomewithchildren.ac.uk/findings/homehacktoolkit/ & a game-based tool kit for engaging diverse stakeholders in conversations about home retrofit. Michael Dougall, Director, O’Donnell Brown  

Michael Dougall is a Director and Architect at O’DonnellBrown and has over 15 years of experience in architectural practice. Michael graduated from the University of Strathclyde Department of Architecture in 2007 and has previously worked for Glasgow based Collective Architecture and AJ 100 practice Sheppard Robson. Michael joined O’DonnellBrown in 2019 as an Associate and was promoted to Director in 2022.

Michael recently led the competition winning design collaboration with White Arkitekter for the Crichton Project, a new £15m cultural building in Dumfries and is Project Director for the Barnardo’s Gap Homes projects providing purpose built housing for young people leaving the care system.

Michael was the youngest elected President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects in 2014 and the youngest architect to be nominated Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects Scotland in 2016. Michael is also an Ambassador for the Architects Benevolent.

Darren Wilson, Associate Director, White Arkitekter

Darren is an Associate Director at White Arkitekter and the quality lead for their London studio. Having led both large and small scale projects from inception to completion, Darren has a deep understanding of how to turn architectural visions to reality. He is passionate about high quality architecture helping to create sustainable communities; environmentally, socially, and economically. Darren’s experience spans all project stages, from conception, navigating the planning and delivery inc. design guardianship. Darren was the Project Architect for White Arkitekters Gascoigne East Phase 2 regeneration project in Barking for Be First, the local authorities development arm tasked with delivering affordable sustainable housing for the people of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
