Following our lunch and learn event on “Top Contract Administration Issues and Common Pitfalls”, the RIAS are delighted to welcome back Shirley Thomson and Kirsti Olson for an in-depth Q&A discussion on the Minor Works Building Contract for use in Scotland (MW/Scot 2016) and what to look out for.

About the speakers:

Shirley Thomson BSc, FRICS, MCIArb, RMaPS, Director, BDG Thomson Gray

Shirley is Director of BDG Thomson Gray Chartered Surveyors.  She has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry working as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, Employer’s Agent and Construction Health and Safety Practitioner (CDM Advisor) on a vast range of projects ranging from demolition and remediation projects, small scale alterations and extensions, refurbishment and conservation projects, new build schools, university projects, retail and mixed use developments and residential developments and infrastructure for both public and private sector clients.  These projects have ranged in value from £15,000 to £75 million.

Shirley regularly provides advice and opinions on construction disputes, through adjudication, arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution.  She provides expert witness reports on quantum, loss and expense, value, procurement and professional negligence to individual clients and to the legal profession.  She has wide experience of all SBCC / JCT and NEC standard forms, and of the FIDIC suite of contracts.

She is appointed to the RICS Chairman’s Panel of Adjudicators, and regularly represents parties in adjudication proceedings.

Kirsti Olson, Partner, Dentons

Kirsti is a partner in the Projects team at Dentons in Edinburgh. She has specialised for over 25 years in construction and engineering disputes and has experience of all types of dispute resolution processes, including arbitration. Dual qualified in Scotland and England, Kirsti has represented clients in multi million pound disputes arising out of the transport sector (rail and roads), energy projects (rig construction, offshore decommissioning and renewables) and PFI/PPP/large infrastructure projects (schools, hospitals, prisons and roads) throughout the UK and internationally. Kirsti is ranked in Band 1 in Chambers 2024 for Construction in Scotland and is a Leading Individual in Construction in the Legal 500 2024. She has a LLM in Construction (with distinction) from Strathclyde University and lectures at Aberdeen University on their MSc course in Decommissioning.
